SESSIONS

Daylighting the New York Times Building — A Detailed Case Study

Wednesday 11:00-12:30

Highly glazed, transparent daylighted buildings are becoming an icon for sustainable design, although actual performance is unclear. We re-examine the role of glass facades, shading and daylighting in sustainable design, by reviewing performance goals and design tools, procurement practices, and the technology and integrated control systems (existing and emerging) necessary to capture energy savings and ensure occupant comfort. We explore these issues in the context of detailed analysis and field testing conducted for the New York Times building, now under construction.

European Zero Energy Homes

Wednesday 2:00-3:30

Dr Wolfgang Feist, Director of the Passivhaus Institut, will give a presentation on the European Passive House developments and the experience gained so far. The presentation will include principles of insulation, air tightness, window + passive solar, heat recovery, heating with fresh air, combined systems, methods and research results on energy balances and simulation, building experience examples, and results from monitoring 300 dwellings within several monitoring programs with measured consumptions in the range of 10% compared to the European average.

Advanced Ventilation Design and Modeling

Wednesday 4:00-5:30

This session will focus on current issues in building ventilation design. Included in the discussion will be observations on the creation of healthy indoor environments in light of working with updated standards (ASHRAE) and new tools, such as computer simulations. The panelists will review new trends and questions related to the expectations and use of modeling in specific applications for design, from naturally ventilated spaces to highly technical building types.
