On Tuesday, March 7, full- and half-day workshops present an opportunity to develop an area of interest or set of skills that will advance your practice. Workshop registration is in addition to the main conference.

Full-Day Workshops

Utterly Productive Meetings & Teamwork: Get the Tools, Hone Your Skills

Tuesday, March 7, 9:00AM-4:00PM

Presenters:

Paul R. Lipke, Sustainable Step New England

John Abrams,  South Mountain Company

Susan A. Wheelan, PhD, GDQ Associates, Inc.

Robert Leaver, New Commons

Workshop Description:

If you have green projects with tricky client relationships, competing goals and/or difficult project management issues, this workshop is for you. Bring a development, building or renewable energy project and you’ll leave with skills, ideas and tools to make it more successful. Cutting-edge practice and small- group breakouts will focus on YOUR challenges.

Building Integrated Photovoltaics

Tuesday, March 7, 8:30AM-5:00PM

Presenters:

Steven J. Strong, Solar Design Associates, Inc.

Jeffrey R. Wootan, PE, Solar Design Associates, Inc.

Workshop Description:

Interest in the building integration of photovoltaics (where the PV elements become an integral part of the building, often serving as the exterior weathering skin) is growing worldwide. This workshop provides a highly visual world overview of building-integrated PV activity, with descriptions of component and systems development using built examples from Europe, Japan, and the US as case studies.

High Performance Green Schools Workshop

Tuesday, March 7, 9:00AM-4:00PM

Presenters:

Andrea T. Ranger, Massachusetts School Building Authority

Loren Belida, AIA, LEED AP, H.L. Turner Group, Inc.

Workshop Description:

Can high performance/green design apply to a school project in your community?  This workshop will identify what a green school is and provide the tools to move from the ideas and design to bricks and mortar.  Learn to speak the language of high performance design and learn about the benefits of commissioning, energy modeling, and daylighting. Includes a design charrette for an actual school project!

Solar & Radiant Floor Heating Workshop

Tuesday, March 7, 8:30AM-5:00PM

Presenter:

Peter Biondo, USA Solar

Workshop Description:

Explore solar heating technologies with modern hydronic heating components and controls for radiant floor heating systems. Topics include: radiant floor construction methods, flat plate and evacuated tube collectors, collector mounting systems, sizing collector arrays, determining solar costs and calculating payback. The Solar & Radiant Design Guidebook and The Solar Heating Calculator are included!

Towards Zero Energy Homes

Tuesday, March 7, 9:00AM-5:00PM

Presenter:

Marc Rosenbaum, PE, Energysmiths

Workshop Description:

This workshop covers methods for designing homes that are powered by renewable energy and will address residential energy loads and methods, including covering envelope, DHW, ventilation, lighting, and appliances. Energy sources and technologies-including biomass, fuel-burning appliances, solar thermal, ground source heat pumps, solar electric, and wind turbines- will be discussed. Guidelines for assessing feasibility early in the design process and case studies will be discussed.

Greening an Existing Facility

Tuesday, March 7, 9:00AM-4:00PM

Presenters:

Terry Brennan, Camroden Associates

F.L. Andrew Padian, Steven Winter Associates

Workshop Description:

This popular workshop, initiated in 1999 and done regularly at NESEA, gives participants from novice to engineer a more detailed look at the science of improving an existing building for energy efficiency, health, safety, comfort, durability, and affordability; in brief, it will help participants assess priorities for greening a building. Areas of detail will include energy usage analysis, stack effort, central systems, driving forces, moisture/mold/mildew mitigation, HVAC systems, chemical safety, changing cleaning practices, building envelope, and potential systems upgrades.  Bring along a keen mind, the ability to constantly multitask different building system solutions, and a sense of humor.

Principles of High Performance Buildings and Construction

Tuesday, March 7, 9:00AM-4:00PM

Presenters:

TBA

Workshop Description:

Confused by the different building rating systems and designations -- Energy Star, Green, LEED®, and regional program names? So are we! For a full day, we will introduce you tothe field of good building practice and explain how and when rating systems or designations can help your project. This workshop will cover introductory to intermediate level material on building science, components of green buildings, rating systems, and more. Bring sharp pencils and open minds.
